Description

Horse Shoe Cottage and Ideal Cottage are two attached cottages that were formerly a single farmhouse, dated 1698 over the front door. The cottages feature ashlar stone walls with a hollow-chamfered plinth and a plain tile roof. There are brick stacks located at the left-hand party wall, center (away from the cross-passage), and the right-hand gable end. The buildings are two storeys tall and have four windows with three-light stone mullions that are hollow-chamfered. A continuous moulded plat band projects forward to create a classical cornice label over each ground floor window, with the mouldings of the plat band and labels being of good quality and differing from one another. Above the front door is an original oval window framed in moulded stone with sunk relief in the spandrels, featuring two serpent-heads in the inner band of decoration. The datestone, also in sunk relief, is framed by the form of a chalice and has a lily beneath it. The Horse Shoe doorway, which was the original entrance to the farmhouse, is hollow-chamfered with a depressed arch in a square head and has a 19th-century plank door. The Ideal doorway was created by knocking through between the third and fourth windows and also features a 19th-century plank door.
