Description
Shoemaker's Cottage, along with its attached wall and gatepier, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some later alterations. The cottage is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a steeply pitched stone slate roof that is laid to diminishing courses. There is a brick ridge stack and an end stack on the left, with a stone stack at the right end. The building has a three-unit plan, is two storeys tall plus an attic, and has a three-window range.
The entrance, located to the right, has a hood mould with label stops and a 20th-century door. This doorway is flanked by three-light stone-mullioned windows that have a splayed section. To the left of the entrance, there is a two-light and a three-light stone-mullioned window. On the first floor, there are three-light stone-mullioned windows, all of which feature hood moulds and label stops, with lead cames. The cottage also has two gabled roof dormers with wooden casements and a buttress at the left end. At the rear, there is a flat-roofed extension.
The attached wall and gatepier date from the 18th century. The wall is made of coursed squared rubble limestone and has a moulded stone coping. The square gatepier features a moulded cornice topped with a ball finial. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected.
