Description
Scriveners is a cottage that dates from the late 17th century and features a later wing and outshut. It is built from cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings and has a double Roman clay tiled roof with bargeboarded gables, which have replaced the original thatch. The cottage is two stories high and has three bays. The ground floor includes hollow chamfer 3-light mullioned windows with plain panes in the first and third bays, while the entrance door is located in the second bay. This door has a chamfered cambered archway and a massive stone lintel, with a continuous label above that steps up over the door. The first floor has fairly early wood casements with iron opening lights that are fitted with old catches.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a good cambered arched fireplace with incised spandrils and ogee/hollow moulding in the north room, along with a plainer fireplace in the south room. The cottage also features chamfered crossbeams with rounded steps and run-out stops. The roof structure includes four collar roof trusses with a trapped ridge, halved joint collars, and two purlins on each side, which are both pegged and nailed.
