Description
The Loft is a building located in Lansallos, Polperro, dating from the early 19th century. It was originally a net loft and is now used as a store. The structure is made of stone rubble with lapped timber weatherboarding on the right-hand gable end and features a scantle slate roof with gable ends. The building has a rectangular plan, built into the side of a rock, with two storeys at the front and one storey at the rear.
The front elevation has a regular arrangement of four windows. On the left side, there is a boarded opening, while the right side has three blocked openings. Above these, there are four renewed timber boarded openings, all with timber lintels. The right-hand leeward gable end includes double doors on the ground floor and a plank door in the first-floor opening.
The interior has not been inspected. Historical notes by Jonathan Couch describe the loft as a sailmaker's loft built at the beginning of the 20th century, originally three storeys high but now only two. These notes were edited in 1871 and published by his son, Thomas Quiller Couch, in "The History of Polperro."
