Description

Two cottages, likely dating from the mid-19th century, stand on a hillside. They are constructed from rendered stone rubble, with slate roofing to Willy Wilcox Cottage and tiled roofing to Charlie Wilcox Cottage, and have chimney stacks built of rubble stone. The cottages step down from north to south; Charlie Wilcox Cottage, to the north, is three storeys and two bays wide, while Willy Wilcox Cottage, to the south, is two storeys and comprises a two-bay main cottage and a former store, which has been converted into a residential space and extends a further two bays. The ground floors of both cottages are built against the natural rock face of the hill. Both cottages have a single-depth plan, with Willy Wilcox Cottage having small 20th-century extensions at the rear.

Charlie Wilcox Cottage presents an asymmetrical facade. The lower two floors have two 12-pane sash windows each, and the top floor has two two-light casements. The former store attached to Willy Wilcox Cottage has two 12-pane sashes on each storey, with some ground-floor windows fitted with late-20th-century timber shutters. The main cottage’s entrance is positioned slightly left of centre, with a late-20th-century six-light casement beneath a slate hood on the ground floor, and a pair of 12-pane sashes above.

Inside Willy Wilcox Cottage, the original part has a living area and three bedrooms, with a bathroom extension at the rear. The living room retains exposed ceiling joists and evidence of a former partition. A 20th-century canted stone fireplace is located on the north wall, where a doorway once connected the cottages. A glazed archway on the west wall reveals the rock face at the rear. The former store contains a kitchen, an additional bedroom, and a utility room, all fitted with 20th-century fixtures and finishes. A staircase rises from the front entrance to a narrow first-floor landing. The first floor boasts exposed ceiling beams and trusses, some bearing scratch or carpenter’s marks.

Charlie Wilcox Cottage has a kitchen and bedroom on a lower ground floor, accessible by a staircase from the ground floor. The main entrance is at the rear of the ground floor, opening into a sitting and dining room with a fireplace at the south end and exposed ceiling joists. A dog-leg staircase leads to two more bedrooms, one with a fireplace, and a bathroom on the first floor.
