Description
Harbour Master's Cottage is a building from the early 19th century located on the north side of Lansallos Quay Road in Polperro. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and has an asbestos slate roof with hipped ends. The cottage features a projecting stone rubble chimney stack, although the shaft has been removed on the harbour side.
The layout appears to be a double depth, two-room plan, with the main room at the front and an entrance to the right, while a smaller room is located at the rear. The building is set into the hillside, resulting in a three-storey elevation facing Quay Road and a four-storey elevation towards the harbour.
The west-facing front has a regular arrangement of three storeys with a single window. The ground floor includes a 20th-century two-light window with glazing bars and a 20th-century door to the right, both sheltered by a single slate lean-to canopy. The first floor features a 19th-century 16-pane sash window, and the second floor has a late 19th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars.
On the harbour side, there is a four-pane casement window on the lower ground floor, a narrow one-light casement above it, and a tall narrow casement that breaks the eaves, topped with a raking roof. The elevations of the cottage are mostly unaltered. An early photograph from the 1850s by Lewis Harding provides historical context. The interior of the cottage has not been inspected.
