Description

Probably fish cellars, later converted into a house, dating from around the middle of the 18th century, with some rebuilding occurring in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof and gable ends. It has a stone rubble chimney stack on the lower gable end. Situated directly on the harbour walls, the three-storey front rises from the harbour side. The structure is built into the rocks toward the right-hand end, where it adjoins the quay. A further three storeys are present at the rear, facing Quay Road. The harbour elevation features a regular two-window front. A small, partially glazed, 20th-century timber balcony projects out beyond the harbour walls. A 20th-century glazed door is on the left, with a three-light casement window to the right, featuring glazing bars. The first and second floors each have 12-pane sash windows. The left-hand corner of the higher end is splayed. An entrance is situated in the higher gable end, with a projecting 20th-century timber porch and a two-light casement window above. There is evidence of altered openings, suggesting previous larger openings which likely served as fish cellars. The Quay Road elevation is asymmetrical, with casement windows on the ground floor and 19th-century sash windows above. The interior remains uninspected. Historical records indicate that in 1792, Jane Pearce leased the property, then known as the “Old Pallace.” It was later rebuilt by Zephaniah Job and became the Pier Inn. An early photograph, taken around the 1860s by Lewis Harding, exists.
