Description

The Smugglers House is a two-house dwelling, later used as a cafe and now again a house, likely dating from the 18th century, although it is believed by some to be from the 17th century. The building is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble, with some slate hanging above the ground floor on a projecting wing. The roof is of asbestos slate, with gabled ends and a hipped projecting wing to the front. Originally, the plan was likely a single depth of two rooms, with the projecting wing forming an ā€˜L’ shape. It is thought the projecting wing was originally open on the ground floor. The main range to the left has a 20th-century window with glazing bars and a 20th-century glazed door, with a 19th-century two-light casement window above it, also with glazing bars. The projecting wing to the right has a 20th-century window in its side wall. A 12-pane window is visible on the side wall of the projecting wing, positioned above the ground floor and supported on imitation stone-clad piers. The interior has not been inspected.
