Description

Numbers 1-13 Florence Place form a mid-19th century terrace of small houses. The houses are constructed with stucco applied to a rubble core, with scantle slate roofs to numbers 1, 2, 3 and 8, and asbestos slate roofs elsewhere, with late 19th century hipped and gabled dormers. Brick axial stacks have numerous old clay pots, and cast-iron ogee gutters are present on numbers 1, 6, 7 and 13. The rear of the terrace has slate-hanging on the wings of numbers 7 and 13. The terrace follows a double-depth plan with service wings at right angles to the rear. It is two storeys high with attics, and has an overall 26-window range, with pairs of windows and pairs of doors flanked by two-storey projecting bays. The original hornless sash windows retain glazing bars. A ground floor open trellised wooden verandah is present with a tented lead roof. Original six-panel doors remain at numbers 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12, with later doors elsewhere. The original round-arched fanlights mostly retain Y-glazing. The rear roof has original slate-roofed hipped dormers with slate cheeks and original windows on numbers 1, 2, 3 and 8; other dormers have been altered. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. The original granite-coped forecourt garden walls are extant, along with restored wrought-iron railings with cast-iron finials at numbers 6 and 7.
