Description

A terrace of four suburban houses built in the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of incised stucco over a probable rubble base, with plinth and sill strings, and have a rag slate roof with projecting eaves. There are three rendered axial stacks and an end stack on the left, and many original pots remain. The houses follow a double-depth plan and are three storeys high, with an overall 10-window range, the central six bays (Nos. 2 & 3) projecting forward. The upper floors have original hornless 12-pane sashes. Number 1 has a left-hand lean-to conservatory with a latticed door and margin panes, and a mid-to-late 19th century canted bay on the right with a modillion cornice and hornless sashes. Number 2 has a late 19th century canted bay on the left with a moulded cornice, an original 6-panel door, and an original sash on the right. Number 3 retains its original doors and windows. Nos. 2 and 3 have original porches with double doors, latticed panes, end pilasters and a moulded entablature. Number 4 has original sashes to the ground floor front and doorway. The right-hand return features a projecting two-storey wing with a 4-pane sash above a 12-pane sash above a 4-panel door, a 12-pane sash to the right of the doorway, and a 9-pane sash to the second floor on the left. The interior was not inspected. The front gardens are enclosed by stone-coped brick walls with pyramidal-capped piers. These walls represent substantial ancillary features.
