Description

No 8, The Square is a house located on a street corner with a raised pavement, dating from the 17th century. It features painted slatestone and rubble walls, and originally had thatched roofs, which are now covered with asbestos slate. The building has a large external stone lateral stack at the front, a gable stack at the rear of the wing, and a rendered stack at the right gable end.

The layout consists of two rooms with a through passage plan and a rear wing. It is two storeys high with two windows on the west front. There are signs of remodelling or rebuilding, including an off-centre doorway to the right with a four-panel door. To the right of the door is an old twelve-pane, two-light casement, and above it is a 20th-century two-light casement set in a slightly dormered opening. The chimney breast to the left of the door is wider on the right, with a shallow flue projection beside the main breast. There is also a wide, three-light 20th-century casement to the left of the breast and above it. The eaves are sprocketted, and the irregular corner to the left is a result of a 20th-century truncation, indicating that the building was originally wider. Ground floor openings have oak lintels. The raised pavement of rubble at the front has been altered in the 20th century. This house is part of a picturesque group of thatched houses, some of which have lateral stacks, as shown in an old photograph. The interior has not been inspected.
