Description
No. 53 is a house located on Front Street in Staindrop, likely dating from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior features rough render and a rubble right return, topped with a renewed pantiled roof and a brick chimney. The house is two storeys high and has two bays. On the ground floor, there is a six-panel door on the left and renewed paired sash windows of late 19th century style on the right. The first floor also has similar sash windows in two of its openings. The steeply-pitched roof has gables that extend over the tiles at both ends, with a right end chimney that has a cornice on a larger external stack. The right return displays a very wide principal stack supported by corbels, along with a smaller corbelled stack on the rear outshut. To the left of the main stack, there is a re-used low-relief carved head, and a small boarded opening is present in the attic. The interior has not been inspected.
