Description
The Well of Saint Mawes, also known as Saint Mauditus, is a holy well located in St Just in Roseland. It dates back to the medieval period, with some restoration work completed in 1939. The structure is made of slatestone rubble and features an east-facing pointed doorway. This doorway has chamfered arch stones above rubble jambs and a rubble relieving arch. The oak door, fitted in 1939, is adorned with a carved figure of Saint Mawes. The interior has not been inspected. To the right, there is a coped rubble ramp that connects to a herringbone coursed rubble retaining wall at the back. The nearby holy well cottage may be built on the foundations of a medieval chapel.
