Description
This pair of cottages, now part of the Noughts and Crosses Inn, was built around the 1860s. They are made of rendered and pebble-dashed stone rubble, topped with a cement-washed scantle slate roof that has gable ends. A rendered brick chimney stack is located on the left-hand gable end. The cottages are designed as mirror images of each other, each with a single-room plan and two storeys.
The front facade features three windows. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a 12-pane sash window without horns next to a four-panelled 19th-century door, which has a small rectangular fanlight with diagonal glazing bars. To the right, there is another four-panel door, partly glazed, with a similar fanlight above and a blocked window opening to the right. On the upper floor, there are two 12-pane sashes without horns flanking a central window opening that is shared by both cottages. This central opening has a two-pane sash on the left and a sash on the right with margin glazing bars. The rear elevation faces a stream and has an extension on the right-hand cottage.
The interior of the right-hand cottage has been gutted, while the left-hand cottage retains 19th-century joinery. The cottages are included for their group value.
