Description
A pair of cottages, likely dating from the late 18th century, were probably built as a single structure. They are constructed of whitewashed rendered stone with a slate roof gabled at the right end, and an axial stack positioned between the cottages. Originally, each cottage had a direct entry into a main heated room – which shared the stack – alongside a narrow, unheated service room (to the left of No. 4 and to the right of No. 2). A staircase was situated against the rear wall of the main room.
The cottages have a two-storey, five-window front, with each cottage featuring two two-light casement windows on the first floor, each containing eight panes of glass. Slightly off-centre boarded front doors lead into the main rooms, which are lit by a two-light casement window with eight panes. A smaller, single-light casement window illuminates the service room. The service room window of No. 4 has six panes, while No. 2 has a 20th-century casement window replacing the original.
The interior of No. 4 was inspected and reveals a handmade brick partition wall separating the main and service rooms. Small iron grates on both the first and ground floors have been removed, but may survive in No. 2. These cottages represent a well-preserved example of modestly sized and detailed vernacular architecture, retaining a strong sense of being a pair. They contribute to the group value of the Sandygate Inn.
