Description
The Sandygate Inn is a public house located in Kingsteignton, likely dating from the 18th century. The building consists of two adjoining properties that have been whitewashed and rendered, with asbestos slate roofs. The left-hand range is lower and has a gabled end, while the right-hand range features a mansard roof. Both ranges have end stacks, with the left end stack of the left-hand range projecting. Originally, both ranges were designed as two-room plan single-depth houses with approximately central entrances, but internal alterations have obscured the original layout.
The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with two windows on the left-hand range and three on the right. The left-hand range features a central front door beneath a sloping canopy supported by carved brackets, along with 16-pane hornless sash windows, except for the first-floor window on the right, which is a 12-pane sash in a smaller opening. The adjoining range at the left end, which was formerly a cottage, has a two-window front. The right-hand range has a front door slightly off-centre, flanked by 12-pane sashes and three first-floor two-light casements, each with three panes per light.
Inside, the left-hand range contains two roughly chamfered crossbeams and rebuilt fireplaces. In the left-hand room of the right-hand range, the ceiling plaster has been removed, revealing the crossbeams and joists.
