Description
Millstone Cottage is a cottage associated with the Poltesco water mill, dating from around the 18th century, with documentation from the 19th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble stone, with upper walls made of cob, and features a thatched roof with brick chimneys at the gabled ends. It is 1 and a half storeys tall and has an almost symmetrical two-window front.
On the ground floor, there are two 12-pane horizontal sash windows flanking a central 20th-century partly glazed stable door. Above the ground floor openings, the windows are adorned with chamfered timber lintels that have plain stops. The upper floor contains two 8-pane horizontal sliding sash windows positioned above the ground floor windows. A chimney breast projects from the right-hand gable end.
To the left-hand gable end, there is a 20th-century single-storey extension that is glazed and has shingle cladding with an asbestos slate hipped roof. Inside, there is a plain, slightly chamfered timber lintel over the fireplace on the right. The roof timbers include rafters that are pegged at the apex and at the collars. This cottage likely served as a home for workers at the Poltesco water mill.
