Description
The Serpentine Factory, located at Carleon Cove, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1866. It served as a showroom and storehouse for the serpentine factory and is currently empty. The structure is made of snecked serpentine blocks and features a scantle slate roof with clay ridge tiles. It is built into the bedrock, with the ground rising to the north.
The south elevation has three storeys and is symmetrical with a gable end. The openings on the ground, first, and second floors are set under wide segmental arches, each with small rusticated keystones. The openings are fitted with 20th-century vertical timber boarding. A datestone is located below the gable.
The north elevation is one storey, symmetrical, and also gable ended, featuring a wide brick segmental arched opening in the centre. To the west, there are ruins of earlier factory buildings, and to the south, there is a quay where flat-bottomed barges were loaded with serpentine chimney pieces and other architectural details produced at the factory. The factory ceased operations in the early 1890s.
