Description
Poltesco Mill is a water mill, primarily built in the 18th and 19th centuries, with a datestone indicating the year 1786, and some early features that may date back to the 14th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with horizontal timber boarding and has a slurried scantle slate roof. It features a square brick chimney.
The east front has a central wide 19th-century stable door with a chamfered lintel above it, and directly above is a central 4-pane window. The south front has two steps leading up to a wide 18th-century door with a timber lintel above. Below the gabled end, there is a 4-pane window and three square brick dove holes.
A later store has been added to the north-east corner, which has a rubble base and 20th-century horizontal timber boarding below an asymmetrical gable end. This store includes a partly glazed door with a 4-pane window directly above.
Inside, there is a 17-foot 6-inch overshot hybrid wheel made of metal and timber, dating from the 1870s, along with two pairs of millstones and complete horizontal gearing. A small crucifixion figure, possibly medieval, is carved on a stone inside the building. The mill pool is still present.
