Description
Orchard Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the 18th century and refurbished in the late 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and a thatched roof to the main house and pantiles to an outshot. The cottage has a two-room plan with a central staircase, facing east, and possibly a continuous rear outshot. Original stacks are axial, serving the left (south) room, and large lateral, to the right (northern) room, which was presumably the original kitchen. The front has an unbalanced two-window arrangement in the centre and right end, featuring late 19th-century casement windows. A central doorway is accessed via a late 19th-century porch with an elliptical outer arch and ornamental trelliswork surround, the monopitch roof and sides of which have been replaced with 20th-century corrugated iron. The roof is hipped at each end. A late 19th-century four-pane sash window is located at the right (north) end, facing the road. The interior displays only late 19th-century plasterwork. The roof was not inspected.
