Description
Ivy Cottage and Laurel Cottage are a pair of semi-detached cottages, likely dating from the mid-19th century. They are situated facing south, away from the road, in Washford Pyne, near Lower Black Dog. The cottages are built of plastered cob and rubble, with stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and have thatched roofs.
Both cottages were originally planned with two rooms, and probably have contemporary outshots at the rear. Ivy Cottage has a rear diagonal stack serving the left room and an axial stack in the party wall serving the right room. Laurel Cottage has an axial stack and the end room is offset slightly forward, suggesting it may be an addition.
Both cottages are two storeys high. Ivy Cottage has a symmetrical three-window front with later 19th and 20th-century copy casement windows featuring glazing bars. It has a roughly central doorway with a 20th-century gabled and slate-roofed porch on plain posts. The roof is hipped at the left end. Laurel Cottage has an irregular three-window front with 20th-century casement windows. A late 19th-century four-panel door is located to the left of center, with a monopitch thatch-roofed porch. A small 20th-century extension with a corrugated asbestos roof is at the left end, and the roof is hipped to the right.
The interiors feature simple carpentry details. The left end room of Ivy Cottage contains a reused 17th-century chamfered spine beam with run-out stops. Ivy Cottage also has a 19th-century king post roof.
