Description
Lower Gatehouse Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring rubble stacks topped with plastered brick and a slate roof, which was thatched before a fire around 1960. The building has a two-room main block that faces southeast, with a service and stair block extending at right angles to the rear of the center. The main block has end stacks and is two storeys high, presenting a nearly symmetrical three-window front with late 19th to early 20th century casements that include glazing bars. The larger ground floor windows have internal vertical iron security bars. The presumed original central doorway is now blocked, with access through a circa 1960 outshot on the left (southwest) end. The right (northeast) end stack projects, and the roof is gabled-ended. The rear block features a variety of casements, including a 17th century oak two-light window with a chamfered mullion and 19th century leaded glass on the first floor of the northeast side. The interior retains much of its 17th century fabric, although many features, including the fireplaces, are blocked or plastered over. The right (northeastern) front room has an exposed axial beam that is chamfered with scroll-nick stops. The roof has not been inspected.
