WASHFORD PYNE Lower Gatehouse Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Mid C17. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with plastered brick; slate roof (thatched before fire of circa 1960). 2-room main block facing south-east with service and stair block at right angles to rear of centre. End stacks to main block. 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3-window front of late C19-early C20 casements with glazing bars. Larger ground floor windows have internal vertical iron security bars. Presumed original central doorway now blocked and door now through circa 1960 outshot on left (south-west) end. Right (north- east) end stack projects. Roof is gabled-ended. Rear block includes a variety of casements including on first floor north-east side, a C17 oak 2-light window with chamfered mullion and containing C19 leaded glass. Interior appears to preserve most of C17 fabric but most features, including the fireplaces, are blocked or plastered over. The right (north-eastern) front room has an exposed axial beam, chamfered with scroll-nick stops. Roof not inspected.
