Description
Crookstock Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse located in Morchard Bishop. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a rubble stack that has been topped with early 19th-century and 20th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. The house has a three-room plan and faces south, with an axial stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces for the central and right (east) rooms. There is a lobby entrance and stairs located at the rear of the stack, and a small unheated room at the left end.
The building is two stories high with an irregular frontage, featuring four windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The windows are a mix of late 19th-century casements with glazing bars and 20th-century casements without glazing bars. The door is positioned to the right of center and is sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch with a thatched roof. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the left end room may be a secondary extension, separated from the rest of the house by a cob crosswall. The central room has a late 17th-century chamfered crossbeam with straight cut stops, while the crossbeam in the right room is boxed in. Both fireplaces are made of stone rubble, featuring oak lintels with chamfered and straight cut stopped soffits, and include ovens. There is a newel stair located at the rear of the stack. Although the roof was not inspected, the lower sections of the truss principals suggest an A-frame construction. The late 17th-century house remains essentially intact.
