Description

MORCHARD BISHOP NEW ROAD SS 70 NE 5/176 - Barton House Lodge GY II

House, former lodge to Barton House. Early C19. Roughly-coursed mudstone rubble, plastered to road end (north) and rear (east); rubble stacks with brick chimney shafts; thatched roof. 2 room main block facing west with single room blocks projecting at right angles at either end of back. Massive rear lateral stack between 2 rear blocks and stack in right (south) end. Cottage Ornee. Single storey. 4-window front with central door broken forward and flanking windows in canted sides. Pointed arch-headed 2-light windows with Gothick Y-glazing bars and containing iron casements and patterns of leaded glass, most of it original. Pointed arch Gothick door includes 2 glazed arched windows. At right end is an original ornate cast iron ventilator. Roof hipped each end and carried out over verandah and supported on rustic tree trunk and bole posts. Main stack has original Tudor style double chimney shaft with star sections and elaborate caps. Right side is a little rebuilt. Window and door have brick flat arches over. End of each rear block has a pointed Gothick window similar to those on front. Interior not inspected.
