Description
Glebe House is a mid-19th century house located in Morchard Bishop. Constructed from plastered cob and rubble with brick stacks and chimney shafts, it features a thatched roof. The building is arranged around a 2-room main block facing south, with crosswings projecting forward to form an overall U-shaped plan. The front of the main block contains an entrance hall and staircase. Axial stacks are positioned at each end of the main block, and lateral stacks are on the outer sides of the crosswings.
The symmetrical 3-window front has 1 window in each crosswing and 1 in the main front, all with 19th and 20th century replacement casements featuring glazing bars. A 6-panel door is situated to the left of the main block, sheltered by a red-tiled, monopitch-roofed porch. An original cast iron rainwater head and drain pipe are located at the corner of the right crosswing. The main roof is higher than the wings and is half-hipped at each end to the ridge of the crosswings. The crosswings have gable ends facing both front and rear. Tall chimney shafts are visible on each side. On the exterior of each crosswing, brickwork of the flues is exposed, arching over a small round-headed window with Gothick glazing bars. Diamond panes at the right (east) end have been releaded.
The rear elevation, facing the garden, has a regular 4-window front, with the main block projecting forward from the crosswings. The windows here are a mix of late 19th and 20th century casements and include a 12-pane sash window. The windows in the rear elevation are larger than those on the front.
The interior retains much original joinery and plasterwork. The roof structure of the main block is mid-19th century and includes king post trusses. Glebe House is an unusually large house built in the cottage ornée style.
