Description
Fair View is a house dating back to the 17th century, with extensions added in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with a rubble stack topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and a thatched roof. Originally a single-room cottage, the house now comprises two rooms facing west, the original 17th-century cottage being on the right (south) side and a later extension set back on the left (north) end. A large rear stack serves the main room. The roof is continuous with the roof of Woodstock, Church Street, to the south. The front has a 4-window arrangement of late 19th and early 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, two to each block. The entrance is on the left of the main block, with an early 20th-century slate-roofed porch having glazed sides and glazing bars. Inside the main room (right) are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a large mudstone fireplace with an oak lintel, also chamfered with run-out stops, and a brick side oven to the left. A winder staircase is to the right of the fireplace. The left block features simpler carpentry, and a small fireplace, with a brick arch replacing an original timber lintel, has been inserted into the side of the main stack. The roof over the main room is a two-bay tie beam truss with pegged lap-jointed collar. The extension has an A-frame roof constructed with less substantial timber.
