Description

Numbers 2, 3, and 4 Chapel Lane Cottages are three cottages located in Morchard Bishop, dating from the mid-19th century, with a possibly earlier core. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and have a thatched roof. The building is L-shaped, with a long main block facing southwest and a small crosswing projecting from the right (southeastern) end.

No. 2, located on the right, includes the crosswing with an end stack and has two rooms on the main front, with an axial stack in the party wall shared with No. 3. Nos. 3 and 4 are one-room cottages; No. 3 has a rear projecting lateral stack, while No. 4 has a projecting end stack. The cottages are two storeys high, featuring an overall irregular seven-window front. No. 4 has two 20th-century casements without glazing bars to the left, No. 3 has two 20th-century casements with glazing bars in the centre, and No. 2 has three windows to the right, including mid to late 19th-century three-light horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars—two on the first floor left and one on the ground floor left. The other windows are late 19th to early 20th-century casements with glazing bars. No. 4 has a central door, No. 3 has a door on the left side with a 20th-century porch, and No. 2 has a door in the crosswing on the right side. The roof is hipped at each end.

The crosswing, facing southwest, features an irregular two-window front of 20th-century casements with glazing bars. There is a single first-floor window with three pigeon holes to the left and two to the right, along with a 19th-century six-panel door to the left. The interiors display plain carpentry details, and limited access to the roof suggests the presence of 19th-century king post trusses. While the general layout may hint at earlier origins, the exposed features are consistently from the 19th century.
