Description

Smithy Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the 18th century, and modernized around 1920-30. It is constructed with plastered cob over exposed rubble, with 20th-century brick dressings up to the first floor level. The cottage has a rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The original three-room plan is oriented towards the south-east, with a stack on the left (south-west) end. The front façade has a regular three-window arrangement of 20th-century casement windows, most without glazing bars. A 20th-century gabled porch covers the doorway located to the left of the centre. The roof is hipped on the right side and half-hipped on the left.

The interior has been modernized, with much of the original timberwork replaced in the 20th century. However, the left (south-west) room retains two deeply but roughly chamfered axial beams and a rubble fireplace with a soffit chamfered and run-out stopped oak lintel, and an inserted 19th-century brick oven on the right side. The roof was not inspected.
