Description
Little Ash is a cottage, probably from the 18th century, located in Chittlehampton. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left end and gable-ended at the right. There is a brick chimney stack at the left corner for the fireplace and a stone rubble stack at the right gable end.
The interior is not accessible and is reported to have been significantly altered in the 20th century, but it likely originally consisted of four ground floor rooms arranged in a line, with two entrances suggesting it may have been divided into two separate living spaces at some point. The cottage has two storeys and features a four-window range. The windows are of late 19th or 20th century design, with three-light casements of two panes per light at the left end, while the other windows are two-light casements. The upper storey windows have two panes per light, while the ground floor windows are from the 20th century.
There are two 20th century stone rubble porches with pantiled roofs and modern doors. Lean-tos are present at each gable end, and there is a 20th century outshut at the rear. The two central ground floor windows appear to have been inserted into blocked doorways. The interior remains inaccessible for further examination.
