Description
Wyndhams is a house located on the south side of High Street in Chittlehampton. It likely dates from the late 18th century, with a late 19th-century extension added to the front right end. The original part of the house is built from pointed stone rubble and possibly some cob, while the extension features an unrendered front gable end with brick dressings. The roof is slate with gable ends, and there is a rendered stack at the rear for the fireplace located at the back right corner of the left-hand principal room.
The original layout consists of a two-room plan, with the main heated room situated to the right of a through-passage at the left end, which has a chamber above it. The smaller unheated room is at the right end. In the late 19th century, a gable-ended wing was added to the front right, creating an overall L-shaped plan. In the 20th century, the passage doorway was blocked, and a new entrance was made into the front wing on its inner face.
The house has two storeys, with the original range featuring a two-window arrangement of 19th-century two-light casements, each with six panes per light, above a plank door leading to the passage. To the left of this is a 19th-century three-light window, also with six panes per light. The gable end of the front wing has two two-light casements, each with four panes per light on both floors, and cambered brick lintels. There is also a late 19th-century single-storey gable-ended extension at the rear right-hand room, which has a brick stack and a corrugated iron roof. The interior has been largely altered in the 20th century, and the roof has not been inspected.
