Description
Penwyn House is a house built in the early 19th century, with some alterations and additions made in the late 19th century and a few later changes. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with brick dressings and has an asbestos slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. The building has gable end stacks with brick shafts and deep bracketed eaves. The plan consists of two rooms, with a central entrance leading to the principal rooms on the front right and left, each heated by a gable end stack. A service wing, likely added in the late 19th century, is located at the rear left and is also heated by a gable end stack.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-window front. The central entrance has a 19th-century six-panelled door with an overlight, framed by a 19th-century doorcase with pilasters and a dentil cornice. On either side of the entrance are large 19th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered brick arches. The first floor has three 19th-century 16-pane sashes, also with cambered brick arches. The right end of the building is blind, and there is a straight joint in the masonry leading to a two-storey rear wing, which has a ground floor 2-light 4-pane 19th-century casement and a first-floor 20-pane sash with a cambered brick arch. A lower two-storey wing is located at the end right, while the left end is blind. There is a lean-to with a 19th-century half-glazed door and a 2-light casement above. The inner side of the rear wing features a 20-pane sash with a cambered brick arch on the first floor; the rest of the building was not accessible during the survey in September 1987. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain good features from the early 19th century.
