Description
The water pump, dating from the late 19th century, is located in The Square, Chittlehampton. It features a cast-iron housing designed as a tall pedestal that is square in shape and slightly tapered. The base and cornice are moulded, and it has a weathered pyramidal cap topped with a globe-shaped finial that has ribs. Below the cornice, there is a wavy frieze and moulded panels on each side of the pedestal. The south side includes a fluted water spout with a bucket lug. The east and west sides display small human marks made from acanthus leaves, while the east side has a large curved pump handle. At the base of the east and west sides are inscription plates; the west side plate is broken, but the east side plate is intact and reads "Garton and Jarvis Manufrs Exeter." The pump is set on a low-stepped plinth made of pitched stones, positioned on the south side of The Square.
