Description
Cobble Cottage is an early 18th-century cottage that may include earlier elements, but it has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The exterior features unrendered stone rubble with cob at the rear and a thatched roof with gable ends. There are stone rubble stacks at the rear, each with tapered caps heightened in brick; the right end stack has a clay pot.
The original layout is obscured by 20th-century changes, but it currently consists of three rooms arranged in a line. The larger central room contains a 20th-century staircase, while the two end rooms are heated by the rear stacks, with the right-hand fireplace concealed. The central room was formerly heated by a small fireplace with a rounded stack projection at the rear, which has been demolished. There is direct entry into both of the right-hand rooms, and evidence of a blocked doorway to the left end room. The upper end room is reported to have been used as a workshop in the early 20th century, suggesting that the cottage may have been divided into two separate occupations at one time.
The cottage has two storeys and features a three-window range with 20th-century fenestration, consisting of two-light casements, except for the ground floor left end, which has a three-light window. A 20th-century stone rubble porch with a gabled thatch roof leads to the central doorway, which has 20th-century stable doors at each entrance. The interior has been much altered in the 20th century, and the roof was not inspected.
