Description
Chittlehampton War Memorial is a granite memorial cross located in the churchyard of the Church of St Hieritha, which is a Grade I-listed building. It is situated near the Lych Gate and several Grade II-listed churchyard monuments, as well as a listed and scheduled churchyard cross.
The memorial features a tall granite wheel-head cross mounted on a slender tapering shaft. The cross head is adorned with interlace patterns carved in low relief. It stands on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The memorial includes inscriptions in raised lettering on the three steps of the base. The main dedication on the front face of the middle step reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." Below this is the phrase "+ LEST WE FORGET +." The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the faces of the middle step, while the dedication and names from the Second World War are recorded on the top step.
