Description

The Shotley Low Quarter War Memorial is a granite cross approximately 4 meters tall, located in the churchyard about 50 meters southwest of the Church of St John, which is also a Grade II-listed building. The memorial features a wheel-head cross, with the cross head adorned with a central hemispherical boss and intricate interlace patterns carved in relief. The cross shaft is supported by a three-stage base.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the upper stage of the base reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE HEROES OF THIS PARISH/ WHO NOBLY GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR GOD, KING AND COUNTRY./ IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918." Below this inscription are the names of eight individuals commemorated for their service in the First World War, listed on the middle stage. The lower stage features the quotation: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN/ LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The dates 1939 – 1945 are inscribed on either side of the upper stage, with the names of those who served in the Second World War listed on the sides of the middle stage. All inscriptions are made with applied metal letters.
