Description

The garden walls to the east, north, and south of Black Hedley Farmhouse date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are constructed of stone. The front wall of the raised front garden is made of coursed rubble, with a later extension to the right featuring squared stone. There is a gateway with block jambs and seven steps leading up. The wall has low chamfered coping and cast iron vase-shaped standards that carry a chain. The end walls are panelled ashlar with rounded coping and slope up to connect with a taller rear wall. To the left, a short link to the house includes a boarded door, while to the right, a flat-coped wall extends beyond the garden and features a rebated segmental-arched yard entrance with a raised keystone. From the front left corner of the raised garden, a coursed rubble wall with flat coping includes a stone trough set in a segmental-arched recess. A rubble wall with arched coping returns to connect with the old stable.
