Description
Black Hedley Farmhouse is a house built around 1750 for Humphrey Hopper, with a rear wing that was rebuilt around 1930 after a fire. The structure is made of squared stone with rusticated quoins and cut dressings, topped with a slate roof. The chimney stacks have been rebuilt in brick on their original bases. The house is two storeys high and has five symmetrical bays. The central entrance features an old half-glazed door set in an architrave with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, flanked by 12-pane sash windows in raised stone surrounds. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers, and there are end stacks. The left return of the house has two bays with 12-pane sashes in raised stone surrounds; the first-floor windows are set under semicircular arches with imposts and keystones. There is also a semicircular opening with a keyed raised surround that leads to a former dovecote in the gable.
Inside, there is a Queen Anne fireplace that was brought from Derwent Dene, Shotley Bridge. An archway with a panelled architrave leads to the staircase, which features an open-string design with moulded newels, stick balusters, a ramped and moulded handrail, and carved tread ends.
