Description
Windlesham War Memorial is a granite cross located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist on Church Road in Windlesham, Surrey. The memorial features a wheel-head cross set on a three-stepped plinth, which is placed on a square base. The inscriptions are made with lead lettering.
The main dedication is on the west (front) face of the top step of the plinth, stating: "TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the lower steps.
On the south face of the top step, there is an additional inscription for the Second World War, which reads: "ALSO THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAME)," with the names from this conflict continuing on the lower steps of that face.
The north face of the top step has a later addition that honors those who died in conflicts after 1945, stating: "ALSO THOSE/ WHO DIED SERVING/ THEIR COUNTRY/ IN CONFLICTS AFTER 1945." The step below this inscription lists "AFGHANISTAN 2001 – 2014/ (NAME)."
