Description
The Mursley War Memorial is made of Cornish granite and features a wheel-head cross that stands approximately 3 meters high. The cross has an octagonal shaft and arms, with pyramidal bosses at the ends of the arms. It is positioned on a two-staged square plinth, with the lower plinth being significantly larger and displaying an inscription in inset black-painted lead. The memorial is set on a two-stepped base.
The east face of the plinth includes the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD AND UNDYING/ MEMORY OF THOSE MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918." Below this is a short horizontal line followed by the names of nine men listed in order of rank. At the base of the plinth, the words read: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The north face of the memorial features the date "1939 - 1945," with a short horizontal line beneath it, followed by the names of five individuals who fell in the Second World War.
