Description
The Cubbington War Memorial is made of Cornish granite and features a Latin cross with octagonal ends. The front of the cross is adorned with a Sword of Sacrifice carved in relief. It stands on a plain octagonal shaft, which is supported by an out-sailing cornice. This cornice rests on a square plinth that sits atop a three-stepped octagonal base.
On the southeast-facing side of the plinth, there is a main dedication in leaded lettering that reads: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY/ OF/ OUR BRAVE LADS/ WHO FELL FIGHTING FOR/ THEIR COUNTRY’S HONOUR/ AND FREEDOM/ 1914 – 1918/ “LEST WE FORGET.”
The northeast face of the plinth lists the names of 15 men, while the southwest face lists the names of 16 men. The northwest side of the plinth features the inscription: “GREATER LOVE HATH NO/ MAN THAN THIS, THAT A/ MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.” JOHN XV.13.
On the riser of the top octagonal step at the front of the memorial, the dates 1939 – 1945 are inscribed along with the names of two men below. There are an additional four names inscribed on the risers on either side of this step.
