Description

Chittlehampton Primary School, built in 1864, is a school building constructed from unrendered stone rubble with ashlar dressings. It has an asbestos slate roof with coped gable ends and serrated ridge tiles. The building’s main block is oriented with a gable end facing the Square, and it is accompanied by an entrance wing to the left and a larger, gable-ended wing to the rear, forming an overall “F” shape.

The main block's gable ends feature large, pointed arched windows with polychromatic surrounds; the rear window is partially screened by a later outshut, while the front window has plate tracery consisting of a quatrefoil above a transomed window of four staggered trefoil-headed lights. An apex bell turret rises from the front gable, having an ashlar base and a steeply pitched gabled roof supported by timber uprights, with a pointed arched piercing. A spike finial is present, and the original bell remains in situ. The entrance wing has double plank doors sheltered by a steep, hipped roof which is partly slated and partly louvred, flanked by windows, with a trefoil window at the left end. The right side of the main range has large, four-light mullion windows with shouldered heads, and raking dormer roofs, flanked by two three-light chamfered mullion windows. The school occupies the site of the former workhouse.
