Description
The Witton War Memorial Cross is a grey granite structure located in the churchyard of the Church of St Margaret, which is also listed at Grade II*. It is prominently positioned by the churchyard path. The memorial features a tall, rough-hewn wheel-head cross with a sword of sacrifice carved on its front face. This cross stands on a tapering pedestal that has a single-stepped base beneath it. Both the cross shaft and pedestal display inscriptions in applied metal lettering.
The main dedicatory inscription starts on the front face of the cross shaft, reading "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF," and continues below on the pedestal with "THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." It lists three names and concludes with the phrase "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
