Description
Great Plumstead War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and features a wheel-head cross. The memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, prominently positioned to the left of the path leading to the church's south porch.
The structure consists of a stone wheel-head cross set on a steeply tapering, four-sided plinth, which has a single-stepped base beneath it. The memorial is marked with the name POTTER, although the identity of this maker is not confirmed.
On the east face of the plinth, there is an incised inscription that reads: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF/ (10 NAMES) / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Additionally, a later inscription on the south side states: "ALSO OF/ (NAME)/ 1939 - 1945 / (NAME)."
