Description
The Church of St. Gervase and St. Protase is a parish church located in Little Plumstead, with origins in the medieval period and later alterations. It is constructed from quaternary flint and chert, with brick, Lincolnshire limestone, and Bath stone dressings, topped with a plain tile roof. The church features a west tower, nave, south porch, and chancel.
The tower is a two-stage round structure that reflects Saxo-Norman architecture, with the upper stage being narrower and likely a later addition. It has a circular squint on the western segment and a single lancet window above. The 19th-century belfry openings are single light, and the tower is capped with a battlemented parapet. The nave consists of three bays, each side featuring two Perpendicular three-light windows. There is a blocked 13th-century arch on the north side leading to the west, and a semi-circular arched opening with billet moulding, along with an 18th-century raised and fielded six-panel door to the south. The late medieval brick porch has a double chamfered entrance and two-light windows on the east and west sides. The chancel is a single bay with 18th-century brickwork on the north side and three-light 19th-century Perpendicular windows on the south and east.
The interior is primarily from the 19th century and includes a relocated military brass for Sir Edward Warner, who died in 1565. There is also a monument to Thomas Pentice and Mrs. Pentice, who died in 1829, created by W. Hardy. Additionally, the south chancel window contains glass fragments from various dates and sources.
