Description

Dunns is a house located on East Street in Chulmleigh, dating from the early 19th century, with 20th-century alterations and a rear extension. The building is constructed of unrendered stone rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with gable end brick stacks and shaped bargeboards.

The original plan has been largely modified in the 20th century but appears to have consisted of two houses with a symmetrical layout of three main rooms divided by entrance passages. The division between the two houses occurs at the left end of the central room. The smaller house on the left is single-fronted, with a principal room that likely had a kitchen at the rear, and an entrance passage containing a staircase that now runs from back to front. The double-fronted house on the right has its staircase located at the rear of the right-hand room. In the 20th century, the left-hand room was partitioned towards the rear to create a connecting corridor between the two houses when it was converted into a single occupancy. There are also 20th-century lean-to and flat-roofed extensions at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical five-window range. It features 19th-century fenestration, including 16-paned sash windows in the outer and central bays, flanking sashes with margin glazing bars above two 19th-century doorcases. These doorcases have pilasters with channeled Greek key motifs, overlights, and four-panelled doors.

Inside, the building has been largely altered in the 20th century, but some 19th-century joinery and dado tongue and groove panelling remain. The left-hand room features a chamfered cross ceiling beam and a plain timber fireplace lintel.
