Description

Smythms Park is a house dating from around 1800, constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with a slate roof featuring a gable end on the left and a half-hip on the right, topped with a hip finial. There are brick stacks at each end of the building. The layout includes a principal front room on each side of a central through passage; the left-hand room has a fireplace on the rear wall that shares a stack with the kitchen's fireplace, located at the left-hand angle. A staircase is positioned between the front and second parlour at the rear of the right passage.

The house is two storeys with an attic and has a symmetrical facade. Each side features a 16-paned hornless sash window beside a semi-circular arched blind window. The central doorway is framed by an unmoulded timber architrave and has a recessed six-panelled door with a plain overlight, flanked by slightly bowed 20-paned sash windows. All the windows are original, and the facade remains particularly unspoilt. The rear of the house has a three-window range, also with 19th-century sashes.

Inside, much of the early 19th-century joinery is intact, although the fireplaces in the principal rooms were replaced in the 20th century. The attic chamber features a cambered ceiling, and there are four-panelled doors throughout. The through passage has a decorative tiled floor.
