Description

Fishermans Cot is a cottage located on the south side of East Street in Chulmleigh. It likely dates from the early 18th century but was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed from joint-lined rendered rubble and cob, with the left end rebuilt in brick. It features a thatched roof with gable ends and bracketed eaves, along with a brick shaft for a stone rubble rear lateral stack that heats the right-hand room.

The cottage has a two-room and through-passage plan. The right-hand room is heated by the rear lateral stack and contains a steep winder staircase in the rear left-hand corner. The left-hand room is divided axially to create two small unheated rooms, with the partition modified in the 20th century.

The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high with a two-window range. All windows are 20th-century three-light casements with two panes per light and peaked lintels. There is a 19th-century plank door with a bracketed thatched canopy. The rusticated quoins are notable, particularly on the left end, which is set in slightly due to the rebuilding of the gable end wall after the demolition of the adjoining cottage in the mid-20th century.

Inside, there is 19th-century dado panelling in the through-passage and right-hand room, and the fireplace lintel has been replaced. The roof structure from the 19th century consists of five trusses with straight principals made of light scantling and pegged lapped collars.
