Description

R.J. Dart is an early 19th-century house that also incorporates a shop, located on the west side of Fore Street in Chulmleigh. The building features painted rendered stone rubble and some cob, topped with a slate roof that has a rendered stack at the right end, shared with the adjoining Homeleigh House. The plan consists of a structure that is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a framed staircase positioned in the center. The passage to the left of the front room serves as the shop entrance, leading directly to the stair hall and rear parlour. A kitchen is located in a two-storey rear outshot.

The exterior of the building rises to three storeys, with a single four-paned sash window on each of the upper levels. The shop window is canted, featuring two large front panes and a brick plinth, with a plain fascia that extends over the doorway to the left, which includes an overlight. Inside, the shop has raised and fielded dado panelling on the rear wall, while the parlour features horizontal boarded dado panelling. The 19th-century joinery remains largely intact, including raised and fielded two-panel doors leading to the principal chambers.
