Description
Rogers Chemist is a house and shop located on Fore Street in Chulmleigh, dating from the early to mid 19th century, with remodels in the early 20th century. The building features painted rendered stone rubble and some cob, topped with a slate roof. The right side has a three-storey range with gable ends and a brick stack at the left end, while the left side has a two-storey range that is splayed at the left end, featuring a brick stack on the left side.
Originally, the building comprised two dwellings, with the left-hand two-storey range incorporating a shop. However, it has been in single occupation for living memory. The three-storey range includes a large room on the left with a central direct entry, a narrow kitchen at the rear, and a garage/store room to the right, which has a winder staircase that slightly projects into the rear right-hand corner. The left-hand range contains a shop on the left and a narrow heated room on the right with direct entry, as well as a small room at the rear that holds a staircase in the rear left-hand corner.
The exterior of the right-hand range has three storeys and features a three-window arrangement. Most windows are two-paned sashes with margin glazing bars, except for the first-floor right-hand window, which is a 12-paned sash. There is a four-panelled door and 19th-century double doors at the right end, which consist of two six-panelled leaves with glazed upper panels. The left-hand range also has a three-window arrangement of sashes with margin glazing bars. The shop window, which includes a doorway, has a bracketed entablature with carved trefoil-headed decoration on the pilasters and a large three-paned shop window. The doorway to the right has plain pilasters and an entablature, featuring a six-panelled door with an overlight.
Inside, the building primarily showcases early 20th-century joinery, including the main staircase, while the winder staircase to the garage/store room is likely from the 19th century. The roof structure features a king post design.
