Description

The Red Lion is an inn located on East Street in Chulmleigh, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features joint-lined stuccoed stone rubble with some cob and has a bitumenized slate roof with gable ends. The shafts of the stacks were demolished in the 20th century. The building originally had a plan of three rooms, but the partition between the two right-hand rooms was removed in the 20th century. There is an entrance hall and a straight-run staircase between the two left-hand rooms. A kitchen wing is located at the rear left-hand end, and there is a small two-storey hipped extension from the 19th century at the back of the middle room. Attached to the right end is a long lofted range that was formerly a stable block, which was converted to be part of the inn in the 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The left end aims for symmetry with tripartite sashes on each floor flanking a 12-paned sash above a 19th-century door surround that features plain pilasters, a moulded entablature, and panelled reveals. There is a six-panelled door, and to the left of the 12-paned sashes on each floor at the right end, there is a plank door. The former stable range has two loft doors. The interior has been entirely altered in the 20th century, but it retains a 19th-century king post roof structure.
